Week 4- Road Trip

This week was a class outing to Dublin City Center

where we visited The Bodies Exhibition , Hugh Lane

Gallery and The Science Gallery in Tritiny College.

bodies

ambassador-theatre-dublin

1st stop was The Bodies Exhibition which was held in the Ambassador Theatre.

“The Exhibition takes visitors through galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body. Many of the whole body specimens are dissected in vivid athletic poses, allowing the visitor to relate to everyday activities. In addition, authentic human specimens illustrate the damage caused to organs by over-eating and lack of exercise. A healthy lung is featured next to a black lung ravaged by smoking in a vivid comparison more powerful than any textbook image. The Exhibition will change the way people see themselves. It is designed to enlighten, empower, fascinate, and inspire.”

Ah I dont know I heard it was meant to be good but it didnt float my boat.

Next on the list- Hugh Lane Gallery

The Hugh Lane Gallery located in the heart of Dublin is one of Ireland’s bes

t known collections of modern and contemporary art. It holds nearly 2000 pi

eces of artworks, going from the impressionism eg,Monet, to well known contemporary artists. The Gallery also holds exhibitions and “explores new expression in multimedia”. I’m not afraid to admit though that half of the modern art I just don’t get, chairs in fields , pieces of art that are just squares put together……??? I don’t know.

Our last stop of the day(before the pub)- The Science Gallery in Trinity College

strap_sg_logo_reversed2 This was deadly I have to say. The had really interesting things there .  The Science Gallery is the 1st of its kind in the world.

From creating light by the energy given off in soil, to trapsing the catwalk where the spotlight is always on you with light motion sensors, this place has something to interest everyone.

Week 2- Guest Speaker

This week we had a guest speaker.

Geraldine Gray who works here in the college in the Department of Informatics.

Geraldine gave us a talk on learning styles.

She talked to us about a lot of different style and skills of learning and how we can identify what style we have.

Different Categories for Learning Styles.

  1. Learning channels- How we take in information (Visual, Kinaesthetic and Auditory)
  2. Cognitive Strengths- How we commit information to memory. (Linguistic, non linguistic and affective.)
  3. Manner or style of learning- How people process information and understand it.(Activist, Reflectors, Theorists and Pragmatist)
  4. Personality type influences- How your personality affects the way you learn.(Extrovert, Introvert, Sensing, Intuition, Judging, Perception, Thinking and Feeling)
  5. Types of learning behaviour- Different types of intelligence.
  • Verbal Linguistic
  • Logical Mathematical
  • Musical
  • Visual- Spatial
  • Bodily- Kinaesthetic
  • Interpersonal
  • Intrapersonal
  • Naturalistic

This lecture was very interesting and useful. It showed the different channels and types of learning styles. We got the chance to identify our own skills and to find our how we learn best(through the right medium, in the right environment, using the right aids. )

It linked with what we are doing very well, in college we do have to retain information and study so to know how best we learn it has helped us a great deal.

I identified that I am a Kinaesthetic learner.

Kinaesthetics learn best while touching or moving.

Tips:

  • Study in short blocks of time.
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • Change location.
  • Have as many experimental learning opportunities as possible.
  • Utilize study groups and role play simulation.
  • Engage in field trips.
  • Use memory techniques.

Best at:

  • Spots/Dance.
  • Adventure/Competition.
  • Running, jumping, leaping, rolling and swimming.

Difficulty with:

  • Having legible cursive handwriting- better with keyboards.
  • Sitting still- need to move.
  • Listening to lectures-attention no longer than 4 minutes.
  • Recalling what has been seen or heard.
  • Expressing emotions without physical movement.
  • Stick with one activity for a long time.

With my cognitive strengths I can say I have an Affective process of learning. Which means I learn best though the power of feelings and emotions, explicit positive feedback and humour.

It seems personality wise I’m an introvert, sensing, perceptive and feeling.

I really enjoyed Geraldines lecture, it was very interesting and it helped me to identify what type of learner I am and how best to approach studying and learning.

Week 1- Getting Started

In week one we got right into it with working on two different continuous assessments.

Assignment one was to create our C.V’s.

But not to just type the normal CV we were so comfortable with and used to but to jazz it up and think outside of the box in terms of design.

We did this for a few different reasons.

  1. We need to learn to list our skills and experience in relation to the job on offer.
  2. To make our C.V’s stand out among the rest.
  3. To show that we can be creative and think out side of the box.
  4. To try and think what the recruiter is looking for and offer it to them(basically selling ourselves)

Assignment 2 was to create a “book-cover”.

Which was a collage of images and text to describe ourselves, our hobbies, what inspires us etc….

The point of this was to introduce ourselves to our lecturers Clodagh and Margaret and to interact with the class and get to know everyone better. This was presented along with the CV in front of the class. Which was a good way of us to develop the skill of presenting and speaking in font of people.
